Root and Tuber Crops Tracer Study
Client: Root and Tuber Crops Development Trust
Project Overview
This project examined the commercial performance, market structure, and trade dynamics of cassava and potato in Malawi using a tracer market approach. It assessed seed system viability, production systems, profitability, market participation, and informal domestic and cross-border trade. By tracking real product flows and analysing costs, margins, and commercialisation levels, the study identified key constraints and opportunities for formalisation, investment, and policy alignment. The goal was to provide evidence-based recommendations to strengthen RTC value chains in line with Malawi Vision 2063 and national agricultural strategies. The project was implemented with funding from Irish Embassy through International Potato Centre
